House Raising & Elevation
Houston TX
When a Houston home has settled significantly below its original elevation, raising it back to the correct grade protects the structure, improves drainage, and prevents future flooding damage.
House raising and elevation goes beyond standard leveling — it involves lifting a settled structure back to its original or a new target elevation, often to address significant settlement, flooding vulnerability, or drainage problems. In Houston, where clay soils and flood risk are both serious concerns, elevation correction is sometimes the most effective long-term solution.
When Elevation Correction Is Needed
Standard leveling addresses differential settlement — one part of the home dropping more than another. Elevation correction addresses cases where the entire home, or a significant portion of it, has dropped below the intended grade. This can result in water pooling against the foundation, reduced clearance in crawl spaces, or a home that sits visibly lower than its neighbors or the surrounding grade.
Significant overall settlement (2 inches or more)
Flooding or water intrusion at the foundation level
Crawl space clearance reduced to unsafe levels
Home sitting below the surrounding grade
Post-flood elevation requirements for insurance compliance
Drainage correction requiring grade change around the foundation
The Elevation Process
Elevation correction requires careful engineering. We begin with a full elevation survey to establish current grades and target elevations. For slab homes, we install piers at the settled areas and use hydraulic lifting equipment to raise the slab incrementally — monitoring for cracking and structural stress throughout the process.
For pier and beam homes, elevation correction involves adjusting or replacing the support piers and beams to achieve the target height. This is often combined with drainage improvements to address the root cause of the settlement and prevent recurrence.
