Under-Slab Tunneling Houston TX
Access plumbing lines and foundation components beneath your slab from the outside — preserving your floors, tile, and interior finishes completely.
Under-slab tunneling is the process of hand-digging a tunnel beneath your concrete slab foundation from an exterior access point, allowing plumbers and foundation repair technicians to reach pipes, piers, and other components beneath the slab without breaking up the concrete floor. This technique is particularly valuable in Houston homes where expensive tile, hardwood, or other finished flooring would be destroyed by traditional interior jackhammering.
WHEN IS UNDER-SLAB TUNNELING USED?
Under-slab tunneling is used when access is needed to components beneath the slab that cannot be reached from above without destroying the floor. The most common applications are plumbing repairs — replacing cast iron drain lines, repairing slab leaks, or rerouting pipes — and foundation repair work that requires access to the underside of the slab. Tunneling preserves your interior finishes entirely, which is often the deciding factor for homeowners with tile, hardwood, or other expensive flooring.
WHY TUNNELING IS BETTER THAN JACKHAMMERING FOR HOUSTON HOMEOWNERS
The traditional alternative to tunneling is interior jackhammering — breaking up the concrete slab from above to access what's beneath it. This approach destroys flooring, creates significant dust and debris inside the home, and requires costly floor restoration after the repair. In Houston, where many homes have tile throughout the main living areas, the cost of floor restoration can rival or exceed the cost of the plumbing or foundation repair itself. Tunneling eliminates this cost entirely and allows homeowners to remain in the home during the repair in most cases.
SIGNS YOU MAY NEED UNDER-SLAB TUNNELING
- Plumber has diagnosed a slab leak or broken drain line beneath the slab
- Recurring plumbing backups that suggest a broken or collapsed pipe
- Wet spots or warm areas on the floor indicating a hot water leak beneath the slab
- Foundation repair requires access to piers beneath the interior of the slab
- Previous interior jackhammering has been recommended but you want to preserve your floors
- Water damage to flooring or subfloor with no visible above-slab source
- Sewer odor inside the home with no above-slab plumbing explanation
- Plumbing camera inspection has identified a problem beneath the slab
HOW UNDER-SLAB TUNNELING WORKS
Access Point Selection
We identify the optimal exterior entry point based on the location of the target pipe or foundation component and the shortest practical tunnel route.
Exterior Excavation
We excavate a vertical shaft at the entry point, typically 3–4 feet wide, to reach the underside of the slab.
Horizontal Tunneling
Our crew hand-digs horizontally beneath the slab toward the target location, shoring the tunnel walls as they advance.
Repair Work
Plumbers or foundation technicians perform the required work — pipe replacement, pier installation, or other repairs — through the tunnel.
Backfill & Compaction
The tunnel is backfilled with compacted material in lifts to prevent future settlement beneath the slab.
Surface Restoration
The exterior entry point is restored, and the site is cleaned. Interior floors are completely untouched throughout the process.
